Director Adam Wingard sounds off on Godzilla’s new look in upcoming film

In an interview with IGN Fanfest, the director of the upcoming monster epic “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” addresses the new pink spikes of the mighty titan Godzilla.

"It's interesting because in the last movie, Godzilla vs. Kong, it was really important to me to keep Godzilla consistent from King of Monsters, so that there was a continuity in terms of, whenever he's fighting with Kong I wanted it to feel like the Godzilla that you know versus the Kong that you know," Wingard explained.

"I wanted it to be part of the major drive of the story, why Godzilla was getting this new look. And the pink colour itself, it's not random. Within the movie there's actually reasoning behind why he actually turns pink. It's not just like, he evolves and for some reason the blue turns to pink."

Many fans online have complained about the pink color mainly because they need something to bitch about. The reason is not being given away maybe because they want it to be a surprise. I would like to have a few of those these days.

However, if you want one, well here is one. Evolution perhaps, needing to grow stronger to battle a big threat.

He has donned pink spines before in a few past movies like “Godzilla 200” and of course “Shin Godzilla”.

Though most notably maybe the studio and investors wanting to spur new interest in the character. I can understand this, as long as it doesn’t piss on what came before I am all about evolution in character development.

Fans will therefore have to wait for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's premiere on March 29, 2024 to see the full reasons behind the giant lizard's neon hues. For as technical as that reason might get, however, Wingard admitted there was a bit of personal preference in there too…his favorite color is pink.
