Since the dawn of the best decade of everything, that of course being the 1980s, the one movie series that stood on top of them all was “Friday the 13th”.
From a mothers grief over her lost son, to a cyberneticly enhanced killer in space, to a showdown with the dream demon himself the films have taken interesting and not so interesting turns. However they have kept generations of fans entertained on the big screen and television.
Jason Voorhees has transcended the silver screen and become the most popular horror icon in history, coining the term slasher before all others. From movies to toys you just can’t seem to see anything without an influence of him on it.
The Friday the 13th franchise has amassed 12 feature-length films between 1980 and 2009 (not to mention Friday the 13th: The Series from 1987 that lasted for 3 seasons).
Yet for those of us who have craved new films in the series, we have been constantly let down by false promises, bad scripts and legal battles that threaten to never end. Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller continue to wave their dicks at each other in court while the horror community continues to from impatient over anything new.
For me, I have no love for either of them as the fans are the last things either cares about. Although we have gotten fan films from independent filmmakers who raise funds to keep the home fires burning so to speak (with mixed results of course).
Yet in the past years, whispers and rumblings of something new have revealed a project that sticks its ass out once in awhile. That is a prequel series “Crystal Lake”.
I know you are asking yourself…Who's Making “Crystal Lake”?
Well it is good ol Brian Fuller, you know from Platinum Dunes, the production company that remade some classic horror films and filled them with dog shit. So the hope is quite dismal if you ask me, though I am trying to remain optimistic.
Adrienne King, who was the original final girl in the first film and decapitated Pamela Voorhees herself and made a small cameo appearance in the second, has been confirmed to be a recurring character in the new series, but it’s unclear what role her character will play in the series. She is also involved in the writing process for the new series.
It of course is set to be a prequel series that leads up to the events that took place in the original film from 1980. For now, the official synopsis states “A group of friends vacation at a house that’s connected to a dark past.”
Clearly, there are a lot of different directions the series can go from there. While exact plot details have been kept under wraps (or under the lake), it is safe to wonder if we might get to see a younger version of Jason as he interacts with campers and counselors in reenacted flashback sequences from the first film.
Of course, the first film bounces back and forth between 1958 and 1979, with a reference to Jason drowning in the lake in 1957 due to the negligence of the camp counselors. While the first film primarily takes place in 1979, the timeline that is referenced in the first film spans over three decades, giving ample choices for when the series will take place.
It’s quite possible that it could take place prior to the 50s, but it’s most likely that the series will take place between the 1957–58 deaths and the ones that occurred in 1979 with the newly reopened camp, it is likely that the series will not focus solely on Jason’s childhood. The series will serve as a more in-depth origin story for the hockey-masked killer, Jason Voorhees.
In case you didn’t already knew that Jason wears one.
Excitement? Well maybe, but for now nothing is concrete. To me I don’t have high hopes for this one, but I will continue to keep my ear to the ground as the rumblings are always there for someone who listens.
I’ll be in touch on this one.
