With Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” opening to $80 million in North America over the Easter weekend, it seems the odds of more adventures in the MonsterVerse are high.
Mary Parent, president of worldwide production at Legendary, tells THR that the film’s huge response has been an “exciting result” and in terms of sequel possibilities:
“We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.”
At the 10-day mark, the film has managed to haul in a strong $361.1 million to date. The film also sported the second biggest opening of the five titles in Legendary and Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse series which began with 2014’s “Godzilla”.
It is widely expected to become the top-grossing film in the franchise domestically, but it’s not clear if it will beat the $568 million worldwide gross of 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island” which remains the franchise’s best to date.
The added bonus? Cost-effectiveness with this film coming in at $135 million – the cheapest entry in the series. The film’s director, Adam Wingard, has previously spoken about the possibility of making a third team-up film with one expected to put a bit more focus on Godzilla.
Legendary is also coming off the success of “Dune: Part Two” which has performed very strongly for the company.
