It is pretty well known that I am not a huge fan of reboots, reimaginings, redoings and all that shit. However, some films come along like "The Thing", "Little Shop Of Horrors", and a few others that do what a reboot is meant to do.
Take what came before, respect it...don't ignore it.
I remember when I was a teen and "Resident Evil" came out on PlayStation. It looked pretty sweet, but I didn't play it. Though I played "Resident Evil 2" which turned out to be my favorite video game of all time.
I didn't think it would get any more creepy cool than that, but then a year later came "Silent Hill".
The game follows Harry Mason as he searches for his missing adopted daughter in the eponymous fictional American town of Silent Hill; stumbling upon a cult conducting a ritual to revive a deity it worships, he discovers her true origin. Five game endings are possible, depending on actions taken by the player, including one joke ending.
It spawned many sequels and film adaptions as well.
When a video game goes to film it usually becomes a reimagined fest of pieces of the game that the writer didn't bother to play and just picked up on the pics online. Though the "Silent Hill" movie was actually pretty good. Capturing the atmosphere and feeling of the games. Its sequel was ok, but felt rushed.
Since then a follow up has been rumored, but never confirmed, until last year when it was confirmed that Christophe Gans the original director of the first film said they were working on "Return To Silent Hill".
In January 2020, Silent Hill (2006) director Christophe Gans told French magazine Allocine that he was in the process of writing new screenplays based on the Silent Hill and Fatal Frame series with producer Victor Hadida. He later clarified that the work was not a direct sequel to the 2006–2012 film series and that his sensibilities had evolved since the release of the first film. He also described the series as an anthology similar to The Twilight Zone, a place where any story could be told, and intended to depict a more psychoanalytic side to the town.
Written by Gans, Sandra Vo-Anh, and Will Schneider, the film is an adaptation of the video game Silent Hill 2. Gans said in September 2022 that he had finished the film's storyboards and that the film takes inspiration from P.T., the playable teaser for the cancelled game Silent Hills. By October 2022, the film was officially green-lit with the title Return to Silent Hill. Gans worked with Konami to create a new aesthetic for the monsters, including those that had been featured in his previous films, such as Pyramid Head.
Principal photography took place from April to July 2023. Filming took place in the German cities of Munich, Penzing, Nuremberg and Lake Ammer. The production was awarded €1 million from Germany's FFY Bayern media funding program.
The film serves as a follow up that serves as a bridge between the original films and a reboot as well. Respecting the lore and adding to it.
It stars Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson and is based on the video game Silent Hill 2. The film was officially green-lit in October 2022 and filming began in Germany and Eastern Europe in April 2023.
James is devastated after being separated from his soulmate and receives a mysterious letter that leads him back to a town called Silent Hill, where he hopes to find her. However, he discovers that the town has been changed by some unknown malevolent force and as he delves deeper into the town, he finds terrifying figures, both familiar and unfamiliar. Doubting his mental stability he tries to comprehend reality and hopes to stay strong enough to rescue his beloved.
I will keep you updated on news as it comes available, though not much else is known as it is being kept secret, a teaser of sorts was released a few months back describing what the film is going for.
